Lowenstein Sandler Named Founding Sponsor of KIND - Kids in Need of Defense

Roseland, NJ (PRWEB) October 21, 2008 -- As part of a national kick-off of an initiative focused on providing pro bono representation to unaccompanied children facing possible deportation in immigration proceedings, Lowenstein Sandler announced today that it is a founding member of the KIND initiative and will serve as its lead law firm in New Jersey. KIND, or Kids In Need of Defense, is a national undertaking initiated by the actress Angelina Jolie and Microsoft Corporation.

Ken Zimmerman, the Chair of Lowenstein Sandler's Pro Bono Committee (and former chief counsel to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine), which is leading the firm's effort, said, "We are pleased to build on the firm's long-standing history of providing pro bono representation to vulnerable children by serving as a founder of this important initiative. Our existing pro bono work has shown the power of legal representation in making the promise of opportunity a reality for children who have faced immense deprivations, and this effort will enable us to expand our commitment." Robert Boneberg, the Vice Chair of the Committee and a member of the firm, will coordinate the firm's effort.

Lowenstein will be handling cases providing financial support and office space for KIND's New Jersey Pro Bono Coordinator, who will train, mentor and supervise volunteers.

In collaboration with the pro bono efforts of law firms and corporate legal departments, KIND's goal is to provide legal representation for approximately 2100 of these at-risk children a year in areas where the need is greatest, including Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and the Northeastern corridor of the U.S. Lowenstein is one of 10 founding law firm sponsors of KIND, along with Arnold & Porter, Covington & Burling, Holland & Knight, K&L Gates, Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, Perkins Coie, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, Sullivan & Cromwell and Weil Gotshal & Manges.

According to KIND, more than 8000 unaccompanied immigrant children arrive in the United States each year. Most do not have a lawyer and face adversarial legal proceedings and a return to the difficult and dangerous circumstances they fled. The legal representation provided by Lowenstein and other KIND participants enables the children to understand the procedures they face and the options and remedies that may be available to them under the law.
